For the love of Sashiko

For the love of Sashiko

April 2026 - The Well Worn Studio, Winchester

Sashiko is where The Well Worn began.

Before the Felicity dress, before the Luna blouse, before any of it - there was a piece of vintage indigo fabric and a needle and thread. Running stitch worked in geometric patterns, methodical and meditative, each line placed deliberately. It started centuries ago in Japan as a way to reinforce and repair worn fabric, to extend the life of something rather than discard it. That idea - that a thing worth making is worth keeping - is still at the heart of everything we do.

I fell in love with it immediately. The rhythm of it. The way something so simple produces something so beautiful. The fact that the stitching is visible, not hidden - the repair is the point, part of the history of the garment.

Workshops

We ran our first Sashiko workshops a couple of years ago and the response was extraordinary. People who had never picked up a needle made something genuinely beautiful. The workshops are back now and available to book - we work in small friendly groups in our Winchester studio, and you leave with a finished piece and the confidence to carry on at home.

What is Sashiko?

Sashiko literally means "little stabs" in Japanese. It is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching traditionally worked in white thread on indigo fabric. The patterns are geometric - waves, diamonds, hemp leaves, interlocking circles - each one with its own name and history.

It requires no special equipment. A needle, strong thread, and fabric. The stitch itself is simply a running stitch - in and out, in and out - worked in long straight lines or following a traced pattern. The beauty comes from the repetition, the precision, and the patience.

Why we love it

In a world of fast fashion and throwaway culture, Sashiko feels like an act of resistance. You are not hiding damage - you are making it beautiful. You are not replacing something worn - you are giving it another life.

That is exactly what The Well Worn is about. Beautiful clothes. Made to last. Cared for rather than discarded.

If you've ever wanted to slow down, make something with your hands, and leave with a piece that is genuinely yours - come and join us.

cabbage-slaw

This month in the kitchen

Cabbage salad with soy-peanut dressing

The salad I've been making on repeat. Crunchy, savoury-sweet and genuinely addictive.

You'll need:

6 cups shredded cabbage — green, red or a mix 2 carrots, shredded 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced A handful of coriander Roasted peanuts and sesame seeds to finish

For the dressing:

3 tbsp peanut butter 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp lime juice or rice vinegar 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated 1-3 tbsp warm water to loosen

How to make it:

Whisk the dressing ingredients together, adding warm water until it pours easily. Toss everything together just before serving if you want it crunchy, or leave it to sit for ten minutes if you prefer it a little softer. Top with peanuts and sesame seeds.

Add edamame or tofu if you want to make it a meal.
