The Well Read: Sunshine, Sashiko & Studio Notes

The Well Read: Sunshine, Sashiko & Studio Notes

There’s been a lot happening around the studio over the past couple of weeks - from sashiko stitching at Winchester Cathedral to new summer arrivals, the return of the Luna Popover and visiting the Winchester School of Art degree show. A little studio journal from the past couple of weeks at The Well Worn.

Made in Winchester

A few weekends ago I spent time at Made in Winchester at the Cathedral teaching sashiko stitching and visible mending workshops.

There’s something I really love about watching people slow down enough to repair something by hand. People arrived with old denim, jackets and pieces they already cared about - clothing they wanted to keep wearing rather than replace.

Sashiko was originally developed as a practical reinforcement stitch, but there’s something incredibly beautiful about the visible nature of it too. Repair becomes part of the garment rather than something hidden away.

Events like Made in Winchester also remind me how important local creative communities are. So many brilliant independent makers, artists and small businesses all brought together in one place.

In a world of mass production and constant newness, it felt refreshing to spend a weekend talking about craftsmanship, longevity and clothing that earns its place in your wardrobe over time.

The Luna Popover Returns

We also relaunched one of our bestselling shapes this week - the Luna Popover - this time in a new white broderie anglaise cotton.

The first fabric almost completely sold out, so I wanted to bring it back in something that still felt easy, feminine and wearable through summer.

It’s one of those pieces that works equally well with old denim at home in England as it does thrown over swimwear on holiday somewhere hot.

Produced in limited numbers in our Winchester studio as always.

111 Places to Visit in Winchester

Earlier this week I also attended Anna-Marie’s launch at P&G Wells celebrating 111 Places to Visit in Winchester.

It was genuinely lovely to see The Well Worn included alongside so many brilliant independent places and businesses around the city.

Afterwards we headed to Greens for a celebratory glass of fizz which felt like a very good way to end the evening.

Winchester gets criticised occasionally for lacking creativity, but evenings like that remind me there’s actually a really strong independent community here when you look closely enough.

Winchester School of Art Degree Show

I also spent part of this week at the Winchester School of Art fashion show and degree exhibitions.

There were some genuinely brilliant pieces of work this year - strong concepts, beautiful craftsmanship and the kind of creative energy that reminds you why fashion still matters when it’s done properly.

The full BA Degree Show runs from 4-10 June across the WSA campus, with exhibitions and work spanning fashion, textiles, fine art, graphics and other creative disciplines.

If you’re local, it’s absolutely worth visiting.

Coming Later This Week - Studio Sample Sale

We’re also currently preparing a summer studio sample sale which will launch later this week.

There’ll be archive pieces, studio samples, one-off garments and selected past collection styles that haven’t been available online for some time.

As always, quantities are extremely limited - and email subscribers will receive early access before it opens publicly.

As always, thank you for supporting independent British fashion, local production and everything we’re building here in Winchester.
